PROCLAMATION <br /> WHEREAS, secondhand tobacco smoke is known to contribute to lung cancer, <br /> cardiovascular disease and emphysema in nonsmoking individuals; and <br /> WHEREAS, each year, due to exposure to secondhand smoke, an estimated 3,000 <br /> nonsmoking Americans die of lung cancer and 150,000 to 300,000 children suffer <br /> from lower respiratory tract infections; and <br /> WHEREAS, the vulnerability of children, and the difficulty they have in protecting <br /> themselves, places the responsibility of reducing secondhand tobacco smoke <br /> exposure on those in protective capacities; and <br /> WHEREAS, the City operates many parks and outdoor events throughout the <br /> greater Everett area and, in that administrative capacity, encourages the use of each <br /> facility in a safe and healthy manner; the Parks Commission recommends an <br /> educational campaign, in cooperation with the Snohomish County Health District, <br /> requesting that park patrons not smoke or use tobacco products near park <br /> playgrounds, Silver Lake city beach, trails and ballfields in coordination with the <br /> installation of"For the Kids—Tobacco Free Parks" signage. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Stephanson, Mayor of the City of Everett, do hereby <br /> proclaim June 2nd as the kick-off date of the <br /> "FOR OUR KIDS -TOBACCO FREE PARKS" <br /> education program in the City of Everett. <br /> Signed this 2nd day of June 2004. <br /> Mayor Ray Stephanson <br />
