In addition, we were able to obtain from the Midtown Community Court a list <br />of locations for prostitution arrests appearing before that court for the period from <br />October 12, 1993 through February 28, 1994. The Midtown Community Court <br />sampled 60% of its prostitution arrests for this 4 1/2 -month period, looking at the <br />frequency of arrests on Eighth Avenue between 42nd and 48th Streets, as compared <br />to those along Ninth Avenue between the same streets. <br />The number of prostitution arrests on Eighth Avenue ,was 20 for that period, <br />compared to 5 for Ninth Avenue._ However, higher than that was the number-24—for <br />the'area west of Ninth Avenue. This may reflect the well-known concentration of <br />prostitution activity along the westernmost stretches of West Midtown, particularly <br />along Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. - , - :.; - , . <br />What' is interesting, however, is that during "this .-4.:-1/2-month <br />period, the <br />location for the"" prostitution arrests shifted dramatically eastward -,:_from <br />west of Ninth Avenue to.Eighth Avenue itself. This change may haz. <br />ve been a -function <br />of police activity and ,sweeps or may be related to other. factors. <br />Nevertneless, the more recent level of prostitution activi <br />west, droppedty, while higher in the <br />along Ninth .Avenue, but increased again along Eighth Ave.'_ This <br />concentration of arrests along Eighth Avenue may be related to presence of adult use. <br />establishments along Eighth Avenue, but may also be related to traffic and pedestrian <br />patterns, proximity to the Port Authority Bus Termin I, and proximity to Times Square <br />itself.
