The building code requires hendicapped upgrades to exiatiog buildiag being renovated w6eo l6e renovation of 16ou
buildings excoeds 5090 of heir ucessed value. It eppears from his formula that leckson Elemenmry Sc600l must ba
upgnded.
An ccessible route through the uhool may consist of trevel iaside the building es well es tnvel outside the building. It
is theroforo permicaible for a lundicapped individud to move finm one level of the building to another by first paRially
traveling wilhin the building, thm going outside the building on sidewalks or other paved surfaces, end then tantered l6e
building to complele lhe pat6 of tnvd.
M elevotor will not be tequired by the Bildiag Dpartmer.:.
On-grade acceas will be possible to all levels of the buil.ling with lhe addition of a wmp leadiog to the bridge on lhe nort6
addition, ond with Ihe addition of a nmp or a stair-lift at lhe main entry of the building. These two additions will satisfy
t6e city's 6aodicapped ccess rcquircmwts.
A nmp at lhe main eouance may ba difficult to achieve et a 1/12 slope. Per the allowance mede in the UBC for existing
conditions, a staper slope will be perntitted by the Building Departmrnt. A 1/8 slope is too steep however, and Tim
Tyler uks that NAC allempt to use lhe shallowest slope pouible at a nmp at the front enlry. NAC will altempt lo
achieve a 1/10 slope at thie location.
NAC is to submi; a diegram sSowinQ eccesible route,a at the building with the per,mit application. 1Lis diagrem should
show how acccss i achieved at all levels xnd vjll be aced by lhe plaas examiaer in checking conformance to the
hendicapped cod.
NAC ezplaiued ut it hu ban the position of our office to lower hendiappad toilet 6eights at student restrooms below
w6at is required by tha cade. This is W allow a hendiapped child to use Ihe rooms cather than just a handicapped adult.
Tim Tyler agrud th't tltis was permissible in lhe case of toilets, bul that at lr,ut one sink in a children's restroom s6ould
be at a legal hondicapped sink hcight, u¢less NAC was able to determine from lhe Eester Seal Society or some other
organitatiou that a sidc heig6l other then thel specified in the Wuhington Bsmer Free Code was eppropriate.
Ylease advise wriler of any additions, deletior.s, or cocrections to the above.
