0j PUAcic waPirs RE: Sewer Backflow Irotection Dear You recently made an inquiry regarding sewer backflow protection. The Everett Municipal Code requires all basements with drains or sewers where there exists the unusual danger of "backup" from the public sewer system to lift their discharge by artificial means or install a backwater valve at the outlet. Basement areas susceptible to backup are typically those spaces whose floor elevation is below the elevation of the abutting street or alley and located within the combined sewer area as delineated on the enclosed map. There are two generally acceptable methods to control backup. Enclosed for your review is information concerning the backwater valve and grinder pump systems. Both systems require maintenance by the homeowner with the backwater valve probably requiring more maintenance than the grinder pump system. Both installations require that a permit be obtained from the Public Works Department service counter located on the second floor at 3200 Cedar Street. Installation of a backwater valve requires a $27 plumbing permit. A grinder pump system requires a $30 sewer alteration permit, a $27 plumbing permit, and a $35 electrical permit.
