As we discussed, lombardy poplars are a poor choice for city plantings because of their invasive root systems, brittle limbs that tend to break in wind, and their short life span. Several ciiies, including Everett, prohibit planting of poplar species in the ciq because of their poor characteristics. 'Ihe trees in question appeared to be in good health, even though many branches }iave fallen in your yard. As I stated before, this tree speci.es is known to have xeak, brittle wood. There is room for concern about the health of the tn:e when construction of the new house oca�rs on the property. Of special coitcern is damage in the root area of the trees. Should sail be canpacted in the root zone, or roots cut for construction the trees could fall. I have enclosed some general tree preservation guidelines developed by a local consulting arborist. you might suggest that the builder use these general guidelines if he intends to preserve the trees. A word of caution here - lombardy poplars are tall, columnar trees. Protection of the root zone as dr.fined usin8 the drip line of the crown is not appropriate in this case.
