This vertical
drainage blanket should be hydraulically connected to the drain line at the base of the wall. Soil
structural £11 may be placed behind the vertical drainage blanket. The vcriical drainage blanket
and structural fill should be constructed in :ifts aRer each course of blocks is completed.
Storm runoff over thc paved roadway should not be allowed to ilow towards the block wall. The
pavement of the roadway should be graded to slope away from the block wall or a curb should be
built along the block-wall sidc edge of thpavement to keep ruuotl'from reachinthe block wall.
Storm runoi°should bc captured with catch basins installed in the roadway and drained away
with an underground drain line system.
Structural Fill
Structural fill is the fill that support structural or traffic load. Structural fill shoula consist of
clean granulur soils free of organics, debris and other deleterious substances, with particles not
larger than four inches. Structural fill shouid have a moisture content within onc percent of its
o,timum moisture content at the time of placement. The optimum moisture wntent is the water
content in thc soil Uat enable thc soil to be compacted to thc highest dry density for a given
compaction cff'ort. Onsite clean soils meeting to above requirements may be used as structural
fill. Crushcd rock fill and soil structural fill should be placed in IiRs no more than 10 inches
thick in loose state, with cach lift compacted to at least 95% of the maximum dry density
detcrniined by ASTM U 1557 (Modificd Proctor method).
Gcogrid Mesh
Fach layer of geogrid mesh should ix laid on levei bar, kfill surface, with one end securcly
anchored between hvo rows of blocks, stretched tight, and the other cnd staked down prior to thc
plcement oP thc next lifl of bckfill.
