APPENDIX A <br /> FIELD EXPLORATION AND LA30RATORY TESTING <br /> IEXPLORATION PROGRAM <br /> Subsurface soil and groundwater conditions wcre explorcd by completing [wo borings and five CPTs at <br /> the site utilizing exploration rigs subcontracted to GcoEngineers. Thc borings were drilled using mud <br /> rotary equipment o�med and operated by Boart Longyear Drilling. The exploration locations were field <br /> loca[ed by taping and pacing from existing landmarks and should be considered approximate. <br /> The explorations were continuously monitored by an engineering geologist from our firm who examined <br /> and classiticd the soils encountered, obtained representativc soil samples, observed groundwater <br /> I conditions, and prepared a detailed log of each exploration. Soils were visually classified in general <br /> accordance with ASTM D 2488-90, �chich is described in Figure A-I. An explanation of our boring log <br /> symbols is also provided in Figure A-1. <br /> � The samples were obtained using a 2-inch outside diameter split-barrel standard penetration test (SPT) <br /> sampler. The samples were obtained by driving the sampler 18 inches into the soil ���ith a 140-pound <br /> automatic hammer free-falling 30 inches. The number of blows required ro drivc the sampler thc last <br /> 1 Z inches or other indicated distances are recorded on the boring logs. <br /> � A truck mountcd rig owned and operated by Northwest Cone Exploration was used to advance the CPTs. <br /> I In this test, a small-diameter steel tip with adjacent sleeve was wntinuously advanced with <br /> hydraulically-operated equipment. Measurements of tip and sleeve resistance allow interpretation of the <br /> soil profile and the consistency of the strata penetrated. <br /> I <br /> Thc logs of the borings and CPTs are presented in Pigures A-2 through A-8. The exploration logs arc <br /> based on our interpretation of the ficld and laboratory data and indicate the various types of soils <br /> encountered. They also indicate the dcpths at which thcse soils or thcir characteristics change; although <br /> the changc might actually be gradual. <br /> LABORATORY TESTING <br /> All soil samples were brought ro our laboratory for further esamination. Sclected samples ���ere tested to <br /> dcterniine their moisture cantent, dry dcnsity, gradation, and consolidation charactcristics. The rcsults of <br /> the moisture content and dry density tests are presented on the boring logs. The results of percent tines <br /> tcsts are also presented on the logs.
