The western portion of the
house has settled, and the purpose of this study was to determine the cause of the
settlement and to propose a way to re-level the house. The study consisted of severa? site
visits to determine the surface and subsurface conditions and the relative elevations of the
interior floor slab. In addition, Ted Newlander made additional measurements to
Idetermine the size of the foundation and stem wall along the uphill (south side) of the
house.
( BACKGROUND
The location of the site is shown on the Vicinity Map and Site Location, Figure 1. In
general the site is on a north-facing hillside which is nearly completely developed with
houses. The site itself appears to have been cut into the hillside with cut on the south and
I east sides and fill on the north and west sides. Figure 2 includes two photographs. The
photobraph looking north along the west wall shows the apparent cut and fill. There is a
daylight basement with the door on the north side. There is a garage, which is attached to
I the house with a bridge on the south side of the property. The north side of the property,
just behind the cameraman, drops down about 9 feet to an alley. The bottom of the slope
Ion the west side of the property is a parking strip, some of which belongs to the Linde's.
The Geologic Map o£the azca (Distribution and Description of Geologic Units in the
Mukilteo Quadrangle, Washington by James P. Minazd, 1982) indicates that
the site is underlain by Advanced Outwash.
