The sole
criterion is whe[her or not alcoholic beverages are served. The record oF
casualties dunng fires in buildiags housine ihese types of uses demonsraces the
need far :he additional protection provided by fire ;prinklers or, altemacively,
the sepazation into small areas. The code intends that alf areas no[ separaced bv a
These provisions and [hose that follow in Section 3803 apply reeardless of
exterior wall apenings.
2. BasemenCs. It is the in[ent of the U. B. C. that the basemen[ be actually used
and classified as a Group A Occupancy in order to require sprinklers where the
basement is lazer than 1500 square feet in t7oor area.
In the case of a multioccupancy basement, which includes a Group : Occu-
pancy, the entire area af [he basement would require sp:inklers.
3. Exhibition and display raoms. This code requirement came about as a
direct :esult of the (cCormick Place Fire on Januarv I6, t967, in Chicaeo.
McCormick Place consis[ed of [hree levels and con[ained a main exhibit area of
3?0,000 squaze fze[ on the upper fevel. Both the upper level and lower level
were in the final stages of readiness for a housewares exhibition and werc
heavily laden wiv combustibles when the r"ue broke out. The fire was reoorted
to have originated in [he storage area behind an exhibie boo[h on the upper Ievel.
The upper leve( vas almost totally desvoyed, and considerable damge oc-
curred to the lower level (2).
Ordinarily, assembly occupancies are mnsidered eo have a very loa fire
loading, and [hereiore automatic fire-sprinklerproteccion has natbeen required
for the building. The need for built-in fire suppression in an assembly occu-
pancy which c: be used for exhibi[ion or display purposes was c;early orought
out by r, 1cCormick Place fire. The display booths are mostoften cons¢ucted
wich combustible materials, and the storaee area behind the booths is a recep[a-
cle for combuseible ma[erials and packing ooxes. Thus, withouc buil[-in fire
suppression che lazee quan[i[ies of combuscible materials and laree areas com-
bine [o creaee an eseessive hazard.
4. Stairs. As assembly occupr, cies conein large numbers of occupants, it is
imperacive tha[ the exits de av;,daoie for use nd stainvays no[ be subjected [o
any fire hazards which could render them unusable. Ths, the code requires
sprinklers to be ins[alled in endosed usable soace below oroverastairwav in the
lisred assembly occupancies [o prorece aeainst the common prac«ce of sroring
combustible materials in [hese enclosed soaces. The reference to Section 3309
( is ro cll [[en[ion to the code prohibi[ion aeainst enclosed usable space under
a s[ainvay in an exic enclosure.
. Other areas. The oher areas covered by this item essentially are stages
and placforms and ancillacy areas in thea[ers. 'I'he provisions are essentially
; identical ro ehose in the first edition oF the U.B.C. in 1927, excep[ for .he
381
I
 1
