Concern with compartmental design with 1 hr. separation walls and
no protection below. Kim discussed design approach and that SSOE has complied with
the City's request. Discussion took place about original building type and rating and
whp.t was actually built. S. Preston had no problem with the compartmental design to
bring areas below the 96,000 ft' requirement. With building sprinklered and SSOE
compliance as originally requested, S. Preston will not require spray on fire protection
below.
2 Discussion took place about shelving and sprinklers in stock rooms. Stock shelving is
8 ft. high and does not require in rack sprinkler per code. S. Preston discussed use of
shelving with holes to allow water to penetrate lower shelving. SSOE will discuss with
Mervyn's. This is not a code requirement but would be preferred by City.
3. Roof permit is ready and contractor has been notified. Discussion took place about new
insulation and the fact that the ceiling space or cavity is not sprinklered. City is not
requiring sprinklers above ceiling but would require fire rated vapor barrier between
metal deck and insulation. In the event of heat reaching metal deck and melting
insulation on roof this barrier would prevent flammable gases from entering ceiling
cavity inside building. This issue is still pending and under discussion between SSOE
and City. SSOE has attempted to resolve this issue with City but has had difficulty
reaching Jeff McFall to discuss. Will contact 3-2-92 and try to resolve.
Submitted: John Hux
JH/rsr
VC&1
SSOE, INC. • 200 MOTT FOUNDATION BUILDING • FUNT, MICHIGAN 40502
