Gould was educated at Harvard and the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris. The Ecole
taught that for each problem there existed a beautiful solution based on clarity of design and the proper
application of proportion, order, symmetry, harmony, and a hierarchy of spaces. When Carl Gould
arrived in Seattle in 1908 to practice architecture, he was one of a handful of local architects with
rigorous professional training.
Carl Gould had an enthusiastic dedication to beauty and considered beauty in architecture to be rooted in
the ancient styles. He thought that beauty would result from harmoniously integrating the purpose and
environment of a building. Gould designed in many styles, including Gothic,Romanesque,Neoclassical,
Modern, and Rustic.
In 1914 Gould became associated with Charles Herbert Bebb, with whom he designed a series of houses,
one of which was the Winter House. In the decade after they became partners, Gould and Bebb designed
over 200 projects, including commercial buildings, homes, schools, churches, hospitals and monuments.
In 1915, Bebb and Gould received the commission for the University of Washington's campus plan.
They designed the basic campus plan and 46 buildings and additions on the Seattle campus. In addition,
Gould founded the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington in 1914,arguing the need
for trained local designers. From 1915 to 1926 Gould served as chair of the department. The current hall
which houses programs in architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning is named Gould Hall
after Carl Gould.
Carl Gould also nurtured the visual arts in Seattle by serving as president of the Seattle Fine Arts Society,
predecessor to the Seattle Art Museum, from 1912 to 1916 and again from 1926 to 1929. He also
assumed a leadership role in the Architectural League of the Pacific Coast and the American Institute of
Architects.
The many significant buildings designed by Carl Gould include Suzzallo Library at the University of
Washington (1922-1927), the Seattle Art Museum(now the Seattle Asian Art Museum) in Volunteer
Park(1931-1933), the Weyerhaeuser Building at the Everett waterfront (1923), and the original Everett
Public Library downtown(1933-1934).
Owners/Residents of the Winter House
The Winter House is also significant to Everett's cultural history by virtue of its owners and residents
- and their contributions to the city. William Neal Winter, who commissioned design of the house in 1917,
was the executive head of the Puget Sound Telephone Company and a leader in financial circles of
9
3
