GEOTECHNICAL INVESTiGATION
CONVRTING PLANT AUDITION
SCOTT PAPER COMPANY PLANT
EVERETT, WASHINGTON
1.0 INTRODUCTION
ra
This report presents the results of the geotechnical investigation conducted for the Converting
Plant Addition at the Scott Paper Company Plant in Everett, Washington. As shown on the
, Vicinity Map, Figure 1, the facility is planned in the northeast portion of the mill, near the
existing Finishing and Shipping Building. The location of the Converting Plant Addition, with
res, pect to existing mill structures, is shown on the Site Plan, Figure 2. In 1952, Raymond Pile
Company drilled several exploration borings within the project area. This exploration data,
along with new information developed during this investigation, was utilized in our study.
. Following completion of site exploration drilling on December 22, 1.994, Dames & Moore
, evaluated the following pile foundation support options: 16-inch and 18-inch augercast niles; and
12-inch diameter, steel pipe piles. Based on our previous experience at the Everett mill and the
• planned construction, we recommend the use of 18-inch diameter augercast piles for the project.
2.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We understand tUe Converting Plant Addition will be a four-story reinforced concrete structure
about 120' by 156' in plan. The building will have maximum column loads on the order of
1100 kips. The ground floor will be a structural floor slab. We understand the finish ground
t floor level will be established to coincide with the existing floor in the adjacent building at about
Elevation 114.9 (mill datum). Since existing site grades across the building footprint range from
I a about Elevation 111 to 114, we anticipate that fills of up to about 4-feet thick will be required.
I:
3.0 SCOPE OF SERVICES
i
The purpose of this investigation was to provide geotechnical recommendations for design and
construction of the Converting Plant Addition. The scnpe of our services was outlined in our
' proposal dated December 14, 1994, and included the following items:
1. Site exploration by means of drilled borings. (The borings were drilled to depths
ranging from about 49- to 88 feet beneath existing site grades).
!:
2. Laboratory testing to evaluate pertinent physical and engineering characteristics
, of site soils. (Index testing was conducted for correlation with other laboratory
' data in our files from previous site investigations by Dames & Moore at the mill.
In addition, direct sheaz tests were conducted to evaluate the shear strength
 , characteristics of soils).
 503289-01.01
t9

7anuary 19, 1995
DnMes s MooiiF;
