Corporation, in <br />performing a tightness test pushed a one-hole rubber stopper <br />into the fill tube of the subject tank and could not get the <br />tank to hold fuel in the tube itself. A second test was <br />attempted on Dlay 17, to checic for large air pockets in the <br />tank. In doing so the tank had to be "topped" and �aas f'ound to <br />be empty and reported b.• O'Day Petroleum, the disti•ibutor. On <br />Saturday, May 18, 1991, the S.M.E . Corporation removed the tank <br />and 270 Yd3 of gas-contaminated soil and stockpilr.d it on and <br />under plastic in the Fire Stations' east parking lot. The txnl: <br />was found to be one footc into glacial ti11 and during the <br />excavations a 3 gallon pocket of gasoline was discove.red and <br />e:ccavated with the other contaminated soils at abouC L�ao feet <br />under tank. <br />As the contractor went deeper the gasoline vapor trails �oming <br />off the dump trucl: got less as we went down to the machines 15 <br />foot limit. The contractor excavated up to the souLh bay <br />concrete apron and to within 5 feet from the fire sLation <br />building on th� east. <br />
