The purpose of our study was to assist you and your conultant tcam by
providing geotechnical recommendations for the design and construction of ihe new facility.
Our work was performed in general accordance witl. our September 5, 2000, letter of
confirmation to Mr. Rory Galloway of G-Logics. Our work scope included reviewing existing
subsurface data, advancing seven exploratory borings to supplement the existing subsurface data,
and performing engineering analyses to develop recommendations for the foundation design of
the replacemenl structure and associated facilities.
2.0 SITE AND PRPJECT DESCRIPTION
The exisling Pire Station No. 5 is located al the southcast comer of Be erly Boulcvazd and
Madison Street, as shown in Figure 1. The existing fire station is located on a trapezoidal shaped
parcel with frontage lengths of about 145 fect along Beverly Boulevard and 165 fcet along
Madison Slreet. Tlte ground surface on the property slopes slightly dom to the southeasL
providing a G-foot elevation differential across the site. There is a two foot high, cor.cretc
retaining wall adjacent to the east wall of the building, provide grade separaticn Gom an
zdjoining parking lot lo the erst.
Fire Station No. 5 is located in a residential ncighUorhood of single-family dwcllings. Thc
neighboring structures are typically one or two storied, wood framed construction with
basements. Because the existing fire station has severe access constraints that make ceRain
vehicular operations unsafe, four of the single family dwellings tliat were located souAi of the
fire station were acquired to pemiit the replacement facility to be constructed over an expanded
fiotprint.
The layout of the nev facility, superimposed over that of the existing site structures is shown on
Figure 2. The footprint of tlie new building will extend furtlter south than the existing structurc.
The new building footprint does not extend over any existing residential structure with a
basemenL With lhe new properiy acquisition, the land area of the fire slation nearly lriple to
about G7,000 square feet. The new configuration will provide Qie fire station will a frontage
length of about 285 feet along Beverly Boulevard.
The existing Fire Station No. 5 and the single-family residential dwellings within the project area
will be demolished in phases to permit construction of a new 11,000 square foot facility. The
new facility will be a high-bay, one-slory structure with a mezzanine level. The finished tloor
elevation of the facility will be set at aUout Elevation 41 G feet. No basement is planned. A 6foot
3P"
