i
L

1

.
-I-
APPENDIa A
FIELD EXPLORATION PROCEDURES
Thc (ield exploration program for the replacement fire station consisted of dri'.ling seven borings
(BH-1 lhrough BH-7) at the site at lhe approximate locations indicated on Figure 2 of the main
texL The borings were drilled to depths ranging from 6 feet to as much as Gfl feet below the
existing grou.id surface. Groundwater monitoring wells were inslalled in the two deepcst
borings, borings BH-6 nd I3H-7. These borings extcnded to depths of 50 and 60 fect,
respectively.
The drilling, which was completed on OctoUcr 23 and 24, 200Q was conductcd by Cascade
Drilling of Woodinville, Washington, under a subcontract to G-Logics. The borings were drilicd
with a truck-mounted CME75 drill rig that was equipped with a 3'/Z-inch inside diameter hollow
stem auger. Soil samples were gencrally oblained from the Uorings at 2%z-foot intervals in the
upper 10 feet of the borings and at 5-foot depth intcrvals thereaftec The sampling was
conducted in general accordance with ASTM tesl metlod D-1586 (Standard Penetration Test
(SPT) procedures) using a 2-inch outside diameter split-spcon samplec The sampler was driven
a distance of 1 S inches below the tip of the auger using a 10-pound weight falling a distance of
30 inches. Blows were recorded for each 6-inch increment of sampler penetration. The numher
of blows required to produce lhc last 12 inches of sample penetration is defined as th St•ndard
Penetration Test (SPT) resistance (N-value). The N-value provides a qualitativc measure uf the
relative density of cohesionless soil, or the relative consistency of fine-graincd soils.
To provide a larger volume of soil for potential environmental testing, Uie soil uelow a dcpth of
10 ieet in borings BH-G and BH-7 :vas sampled using 3-inch dianieter split spoon samplers
driven with a 300-pound hammer that was dropped a distance of 30 incles. The penetration
resislance from this operation provides a qualitative indication of soil density, and is nol
considered equivalent to the SPT N-value.
Personnel from PanGEO and G-Logics were present duoughuut the field exploration program to
observe the borings, assist in sampling, and lo prepare descriptive logs of the explorations. Soi}s
were classified in general accordance with the guidelines shown on Figure A-1. Summary logs
of these borings are includd as Figures A-2 through A-8.
A-1
sZ
