Geotechnicnl ngineering Evalu2tion
1303 Madrona Ave - King
December 2, 2006
RMI Fila No. 39306
Page 7
Sttvcturnl Fill
Gcoernl: A.11 fill placed beneath buildings, paveinents or o:her seulement-sensitivc fcatures should bc
placed as structural fill. Por thc purpuse of this report, sincturul fill is defined as mnrerial hat is placed
in accordnnce wiili prescribed methods and standards, and is monitored by an expericnccd geotechnical
profnssienal or soils technician. Pield monitoring procedures would includc the performance of 1
representative number of in-pluce densiry tests to document die attainment of the desired degree of
reiative compaction. The nreas to receive fill hould be prepared as oudined in Uie Site I'reparatiort nnd
Grading subscclion of this repod.
Matcrials: Importcd structurnl (ill shnuld consist of a good quality, froc-draining granutnr soil, frcc of
organics ntd othcr dcictcrious mntcrial, nnd bc ticll grndcd to s:naximum sizc of about 3 mches.
Importcd, nll-weatlicr fll shoulJ mcct thcsc requiremenls, und also should contain ro more tL=n obout i
perccnt fines (soil passing a U.S. No. 200 Sieve), based on that Gaction passing Uic U.S. 3/4-inch sicve.
'I'Lc on-sitc nativc soils predominandy comprisc mcdium sand widi soue silt. It may be feasible to use
ihis mnterial as stnwtural fill, if it is rc!ntivcly free of organics and can bc moistue-conditioned to nenr-
optimum moisture content for compnction. The necessary moisturo-conditioning may consist of drying
tlic material, whicli vould require an ndequate nren to spreud the mnterial uul. Drying ihc malerial nmy
not bc possible outsidc oF thc summer season.
Pill Placement: Pollowing subsradc preparation, placemeut uf tlie stnicturul fill mtiy procecd. All fill
should bc placed in G- to 8-inch Aiick uniform lifis, and cach lili shoulel be spread evenly and be
t6oroughly compncted prir to placemcnt of subsequcnt litis. All structurai fill underlying building ttreas
should bc con, pacted to at Icast 95 percent of its mnximum dry dcnsity. Maximum dry dcnsity, in this
rcport, rcfers to (fiat dcnsity ns determined by tlic ASTM D 1557 compaction tcst procedure. Tle
moisture cuntent of Oie soils ro Uc compncteJ should be within about 2 percent of optimum, so that n
rcadily compactable cundilion cxisls. It may be necessary to overexcavate nnd remove wet soils in cases
whero drying to a compnctaUle candition is nol feasiUle. All compaction should bo nccomplished by
cquipment of a type and size sifficient to a[iain the desired degce uf compaetion.
RMI ASSOCIATES LLC
G
•d 6ST9-69 fD9E1 saz?yd P1N su9tsa❑ d9S°EO LO 60 JeW
