Gcutcchnic,l 1?nginecring Kcport
liousing liopc
Dccembcr 5, 2004
RMI File No. 21704
Pgc 7
Crosion Control Nicas::cs
Thc erosion hazard lor the omsite soils is sliah[ and is dependent on how the s-ite is graded and
watcr is allowcd [o aceumulate. I3es[ Management Practices (BMPs) should be used to control
aosion. Areas distr.rbed during construction should bc protected from erosion. Measures taken
may include diverting surface water away from the stripped areas. Silt fences or straw bales
shoulJ be erected tu preven[ muddy watcr from leaving the site. Disturbed areas should bc
planted wrth vegelation as soon as practical. The vegetatian should be maintained until
established. 1'he erosion po[en[ial of areas not s[ripped of vegetation should be minimal.
Sitc Prcparation and Grading
The first step oP site preparation after removal of[he existing struchres shold be to strip thc
topsoil, fill, or loose soils to expasc medium dense o better native soils in foundation area. This
svipped material should be removed from the site. The topsoil can be stukpiled for later usc as
landscapi,g idl. Debris may have to be removed from purtions of the till if it is to be used as
Itmdscaping fill.
Tlic underlying na[ivc soils epected to be encountered after site stripping are considcred slightlt'
to moderntely moisturo-sensitive. We expect t6at if thcy become we[during constructio!, a Ihin
surlicial layer may be disturbcd. Any disturbed soil sf ould be stripped from the subgrade before
the pnvement section and foundations are installed. 'l liis should not be a problem if earthwork is
conducted during thc dry wea[her.
lf thc round surface, after the stripping operatien, should appear to be loose, it should bc
prooGolled and compacted to a noa-yielding condition and then pmbed. Amas observed tu pump
or weave sheuld be reworked to structural till specifications or overexcavated and replaced with
properly compacted structurai fill or rock spalls. If significan[ surface water tlow is encountered
during construction, this flow should be diverted around arcas to be developed. Shallow ground I
water, if encountered, slwuld be intercep[ed with cut off drains and routed outside of the planned I
graJing arca.
If wet or soft suberade condi[ions are encountercd, alternative site preparation methods may be
necessary. The prepamd subgrade may be protected from disturbance by placing a blanket of
RMI ASSOC/ATS, LTD.
   i
