Gotechnical Gngineering Report
llousing Flopc
December 5. 2004
RMI Pilc No.21704
Page 9
Structurnl rill
General: Pill placed bencath the founda[ions, slabs-ou-grade, pavemcnts, or other settlement-
sensitive strucWres should be placed as structural fill. S[ructural fill, by definition, is placed in
accordancc with prescribed mcthods and standards and is monitored by an experienccd
geotechnical professional or soils technician. Field monitoring procedures would include ihe
perlormauce of a representative number of in-place density tests to document the attainment of
[he desired degree of relative compaction. The area to receive the fill should be prepared as
oudined in the Site Preparation and Grxding subsec[ion of[bis report.
Materials: Lnported strucwral fill should consist of a good qimlity, free-draining, granular soil,
fine of organics and other deletcrious material and be well graded to a masimum size of about 3
inches. Imported, all-wea[her fill should contain no more than about five percent fines(soil finer
[han U.S.No. 200 sievc, bns-ed on that fraction passing the U.S. 3/4-inch sieve).
Wc expect that compaction oF the sandy, native soils to structural fill specifications should be
xhicvable depending on the moisWre content. Thc use of omsite soils as sVuctural fill would be
depcnden[ on moisturc-con[ent con[rol. Some drying of die soils may be nccessary in arder to
achievc compaction during winter weatlcr. During«arm, sunny days this could be accomplished
by spreading Ihe material in [hin litts and compncling. Some aeration and/or addi[ion of moisture
may also be necessary. We Pt die soils could be used except in the wettest months of the
ycar.
Pill Placement: Pollowine subgrade preparation, placement of the structural till may proceed.
All backfilling should be accomplished in 6- to 8-inch-thick, uniform lifts. Each lift should be
sprcad evenly and be thoroughl}'compacted prior[o placement of subsequent IiRs. All struc[ural
fill underlying building areas and within 2 feet of pavement suberadc should be compacted to
minimum of 95 percent of its maximum dry density. Maximum dry density, in this report, refers
to that density as de[crmined by the ASTM D-157 Cumpaction Test procedure. Fills more than
2 feet beneath sidewulks and pavment subgrades should be compacted to 90 percent of their
msimum dry density. The mois[ure conten[of the s'oils ro be compacted should be within abuut
3 perocnt of optimum so that a readily compactable condition esists. It may be necessary to
overexcavate and remave wet soils in cases where drying to a cumpuctable condition is not
RMI ASSOCIATES, LTD.
