Inspection of the Public Library by Hills Collins & John Farrens march 15, 1971 Corrections necessary to make the building comply with the :xit requirements of the Uniform Building Code. 1. The stair in the middle of the building which is part of the new addition should not be considered an exit because of the location. The location is such that it is not readily identified and it would be difficult to direct the public to it's location. a, remove exit light at top of stairs b. remove exit light at bottom of stairs 2. The West exit from the auditorium should be accomplished by: a. Installing a new exit light with directional arrow in ceiling at the stair. The arrow should point away from the stair toward the West. b. Install an exit light over door in partition between the book storage room and the reading room having the West exterior exit. Light should be installed on storage room side. c. Door swing in above mentioned partition to be changed to swing in line of egriss; namely into the west reading room. 3. The North stair should he made into an exit enclosure by: a. Adding a door and partition at the top level. Door should be 1-3/4" solid core with self closer with fusible link. The door should swing into stairway. b. An exit light should be installed over the above mentioned door on the hall side. c. At the main floor level the window openings into the stair enclosure should be closed with a 1-hour construction. d. A new 1-3/4" solid core door with self -closure with fusible link should be installed at main level. Door shall swin- into stair enclosure. Door may have a maximum of 100 square inches of wire glass. e. The door to the outside at grade level should have the padlock removed and replaced with panic hardware. f. At the basement level a new door and 1-hour partition should be installed into stair enclosure. Door to be 1-3/4" solid core with self -closer and fusible link. Install exit lite over door. g. Replace burned out exit light bulbs. 4. Add a new exit (door with exit light and metal fire escape) from the South West corner of the addition. Fire escape to go to grade. It is recommended that the open stair from the main floor to the basement in the original building be closed. This can be done by removing stairs and building a new floor in stair well, or enclosing the stair at bottom, or top with a 1-hour partition with 1-hour door. This would make a fire separation between the base- ment and the main floor. This open stair is the only violation of a fire separation between the two floors and this weakness can be easily corrected.
