LARRY CALLAHAN, BUILING
SAM PRESTON, ASS?. FIRE IARSHAL
' MkY 4, 1983
37.09 HOYT
During a recent fire prevention inspection of the condominiums at 3209 Hoyt,
a serious life safety hazard was revealed.
This building was ,riginally constructed as a 3-story, 12 unit residential
occupancy. Ground level was open parking below three living levels above.
Acces>; to the living areas was by elevator and two open stairways; one rorth
side and one south. These stairways essentially joined two 3-story six unit
buildings and were completely open to the outside.
In 1977 or 1978 a permit o-as taken te do sheetrock work at the ground level.
The area immediately surruunding the stairs and clevator was enclosed into
a lobby with two exit dours.
At the same time, apparently, the exterior side of both stairways was covered
with a translGcent vinyl type material. This was probahly done to conserve
energy.
However, in the process, a very seious life hazard was caused. We ro; have
a 4-stor,y building with two stairways, but only one way out, because everything
from the lobby is enclosed in one common area. Fire at any level could cause
some very serious egress problems.
This situation warrants iinmediate attention. Corrective action must be taken
as soon as possible.
SP/sh 'A,
v
