UBL/L N/OrrXS
RE: Sewer Backflow Protection
Dear
You recently made an inquiry regarding sewer backflow protection. The Everett
Municipal Code requires all basements with drains or sewers where there exists the
imusual danger of "backup" from the public sewer system to lift their ?ischarge by
artificial means or install a backwater valve at the oude.
Basement areas susceptible ro backup are typically those spaces whese floor eleation is
below the elevation of the abutting street or alley and located within the combined sewer
area as delineated on the enclosed map.
There are two generafly acceptable methods to control backup. Fr.losed for your review
is information concerning the backwater valve and grinder pum systems. Both systems
require maintenance by the homeowner with the backwater valve probably requiring more
maintenance th:u the grinder pump system. Both installations cequire that a permit be
obtained from the Public Works Department secvice counter located on the second floor
at 3200 Cedar Strect. Installation of a backwater valve requires a$27 plumbing permit.
A grinder pump system requires a S30 sewer alteration permit, a27 plumbing permit,
and a S35 electrical permit.
We hope this corresrondence will help clarify and p•.ovide guidance conceming this
issue. ThP !icensed plumber of your choice should be. able to review your situation,
answer your site specific questions and install the system of your choice with the
zppropriate permits.
Sincerely,
Larry Crawford
Eng/PuU Svs Jiector
LC:jd:backllow
CITY OF EVEREiT 3=00 Cedar Street • EveretL WA 98201 •(425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257-8856
