Geotechnical Engineering Study Page 6
00-2267 Three Story Addition - 500 Laurel Street, Everett
January 31, 2001
SITE C()NDITIONS
Surface
The site is located a;ong the crest of a steep bl.ff slope, just downslope of Laurel
Street and overlooking Possession Sound in Everett, Snohomish County,
Washington (see Plate 1). The property is bounded to the northeast and south by
existing residential development. To the southwest there is steeply slo,r,;ng and
currently undeveloped and partially wooded property.
i he site is currently occupied by a residence located approximacely in the center
of the property. There is a shori and relatively gentle siope down from the e:e of
Laurel Street to the house. We estimate this slope exhibits a topographic change
of about three to five Fee± over a horizontal distance of between about ten ('0) and
eighteen (18) feet. This area, as well as the "side yards" to the north and south of
the residence, is covered with sod lawn, and supports some landscaping and
several trees.
The area of the proposed addition, alcng the rear (westem) side of the residence,
currently comprises a relatively flat and level gravel covered driveway and vehicle
"turnaround." The existing garage is accessed off this driveway at the rear of the
basement level of the house. Extending off the southwestem end of the garage
there is a short concrete retaining wall that curves out to meet a higher retaining
wall along the western end of the driveway ;see Plate 2). This retaining wall
increases in height from about six feet at the southwestem comer up to about
seven and oe half feet at the northwest comer wl-ere it makes a right-angle tum,
then up to about ten (10) feet at the northeastem property line.
Beyond the westem perimeter chain link fence and the above-described concrete
retaining wall there is a short relatively flat "plateau-like" area which ranges between
about five and eighteen (18) feet in width. At the edge of this "plateau-iike" area,
which forms the crest of the sites' westem bluff slope, the slope drops away at an
almost vertical inclination for a heiglit of about nineteen (19) feet. From the toe of
the near vertical bluff the slope extends down towards the rilroad right-of-way
located along the toe of the slope about one hundred and twenty ('120) feet below.
This central poition of the western slope is inclined at a gradient of about 1H:1\/
V
