Geotechnical Engineering Study
00-2267 Three Story Addition - 500 Laurel Street, Everett
January 31, 2001
Page 22
Settlement: On the basis ofthe observed site soil conditions and our engineering
analyses, and working on ti._ assumption that the foundations wiil bear on
undisturbed or rzdensified silty sand or sand soils, or on a compactsd structural fill
placed on a firm and competent silty sand or sandy silt soil, it is our opinion that the
maximum settlement potential under the proposed combined building dead and
live load: is likely to be within the building's tolerable limits. We estimate that the
maximum potential settlement is likely to be of the following order:
Maximum estimated settlement under =
applied building dead and live load
Maximum estimated differential settlement =
across half build'+ng addition length
< 3/4 inch
<'/z inch
The owner shnuld understand that the majurity of these magnitudes of total and
differential settlement should be expected to occur as the dead loads are applied
during the construction of the building. Tha remainder should be expected to occur
after construction is completed.
Lateral Load Resistance: Lateral loads can be resisted by a combination of
passive pressures acting on the buried portions of the building and foundations, or
friction between the concrete elements of the foundation and floor slab and the
urderlying subgrade. or the former, the concrete must be placed neat against
competent native soil or compacted structural fill. We recommend the following
parameter be used in design.
e Estimated passive pressure acting = 260 pcf
against buried foundation element
including 1.5 factor of saety (Neglect
upper 12 inches in design)
■ Estimated Coefficient of frictional
resistance between the concrete
foundation elements and subgrade
 :
3y
