Geotechnical Engineering Study page 45
00-2267 Three Story Addition - 50i Laurel SQreet, Evsrett
January 31, 2001
APPENIX C
00-2267
Supplemental Pin-Pile Foundation Suoaort
General: As indicated earlier, it might prove helaful to provide some supplemental
vertical support beneath the perimefer footing around the nrestem end of the
proposed addition. This supplementai foundation support system should help
further reduce the risk of foundation system undermining in the event a
"catastrophic"landslideweretoac:urunderearthquake(seismic)conditions. The
following paragraphs provicJe more detailed descriptions of the system and its
installation, and the prooftesting ofthe installed system.
Pin-Piling: The pin-piles should consist of segments of two inci (nominal)
diameter, schedule 80, "strong" black iron pipe. Each pile should be driven-in-
place with an air compressor operated ninety (90) pound jack hammer until refusal
;defined below) is achieved, or the top of the pile segment is about six inches
above the ground surface. In the latter case, anothei segment of pile is attachd
with a"force-fiY' pinned connector. After connecting the segrnents driving is
restarted and continued again until refusal is achieved or another pile segment is
required. Because of the proposed usage of these piles we recommend that the
force fit connectors also be welded for the fuil circumference of the pipe. Refusal
is defined as follows:
"Refusal in considerd to be ess than one inch of pile
penetration after one full minute of continuous driving
with an air compressor operated nirrety (90) pound jack
hammer."
Pin-Pite Underinning Design Parameters: We recommend the following
geotechnical parameters be used in the design of the supplemental pin-pile
underpinning for this proposed addition:
e Allowable axial pin-pile load capacity = 4 kips
(including all dead and live loads)
G
