The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) cross mnnection regulations require water
purveyors, such as Everett, to maintain safe drinkfng water by taking precautions to ensure that fire
protection water in both commercial and residential sprinkler systems dces not backFlow into the public
system. In the past, single check valves were considered as an adequate backflow device for mmmerctal
properties. However, DOH has determined that double check detector assemblies (DCDA) are the
minimum acceptable backFlow protectton device for commercial fire protection systems. Some
commercial buildings in Everett still have single check-valves installed, which now must be upgraded to a
DCDA for commercial fire ::ervices when new mnstruction is planned that will affect fire services. Thfs
additional protection is necessary to adhere to DOH regulations and ensure safe drinking water.
Sincerely,
 hM ta-'k-
Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connection Specialist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assfstant Fire Marshal ]im Venturo, Utilitles Records Manager
Verl Sly, Meg Haley
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 •(425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257-8882
