By Balsom, an em loyee ot
the City Sewer De_artment was called t Lnspect the cause of
failure and the reoair as mad: by Hoffmsn. I wac further
informed t,iat Mr. Hoffman vras verti ur.set and insistant that rhe
fallure was the fault of the Clty nd the Clty Inaector and the
City would have to pi,y for tne reoair.
Wednesday afternoon. FebruRry 25th I stop,ec at the Hoffman
residence to talk wlth Mr. Hoffcnan. Ke was not at h•me so I
left my card. About 4:3J p.m. D1r. Hoffman cl:sd me by phone.
He was highly agitated, refused to allox me to say anything,
we,s very adamant thst t:he Cit3• and the City Inspedtor were to
fEubt, accused the Inspector uf being partlal to the aontractr
allowing them to put in pioe r,s they pleased, stated the iayor
wes a ueraonal frlend of his, that he would get to the bottom
of thls, that he woiild see his La+ryer. and the City had to oey
for his trouble. He revl.nded me that he had lost his srm at
the mill four yairs ago a.nd he had t hire help and the neigh-
bors eculd testify t the cndltions that exiated. H11 I was
able t say in thls one side conversation was "Well, perhape
Mr. Hoffman you shoul3 see the i'afr and file a clatm a,gainst
the City." He said he wu1d.
Our records show that 1•ir. Hoffmar Lnstalled this side sewer
from hls liast pr,perty 11nes to thP r•=..sidence house draln on
August l, 1961. Mr. Hoffman. dld the xnrk hi^self. The
connection at the prpert,y llne wes made to the aix inch
extention from tha roain sewer to the property line.
tie used a 6" x 4" reducer - an 1/8 bend and raised the llne from
6' below surface to 3' below surfuce, than hald a grade uf
apurolmately 2 to the house drain.
The materials used - the reducer snd 1/t bend were :nade by a
local suppller, i believe Assoclated 8and c ravel, and appesred
at the tl.rne they were installed, to be the be:t grade sbtainable
locall,y.
Mr. Hoffman is qulte unreasonable t talk to. His clalm would,
I belleve, be wry hard t: pr.ve. Like wlse, after nine yeers,
so would the Cltles.
tlis clalm that the Contractur, Hobqck Backhoe 3ervlce. put in
the reducer and 1/8 oend I believe to be unfunded.
+ir. 3o^F:an did not obtain a,erLt to ake the ripair.
