March 31, 2008
Mr. Paul Tessier
L&A Job No. 8A027
Page 4
undisturbed state can provide good foundation support with little settlement expected for lighl to
moderate residential structures.
Soil Conditions
We werc the gcotechnical engineer of rccord for a new duplex building project rccently
constructed on the Refcrence Site, about a block south of the site of the to be renovated subject
residence. We provided geotechnical enginecring and construction inspection services, and
vcrified footing bearing soils and evaluate cut bank stability of footprint excavation for the
Referencc Project. '1'he building footprint on the Refercnce Site was cut down to about 7 feet.
The soil conditions exposed on the cut banks werc composed of 10 to 12 inches of dark-brown,
loose, organic topsoil, underlain by 3 to 4 feet of light-brown, dense, fine to medium sand with a
trace of gravcl. This sand laycr was underlain by a deposit of'gray, hard, fine sandy silt. A ste,el
'I'-bar manually pushed into footing bearing soils at bottom of excavation could penetrate no
more than an inch. 'Che cut banks of thc building footprint excavation had stooci very stable
wilhout any signs of raveling or sloughing. We expect the soil conditions at the subject project
site to be similar to those at the Rcference Site.
Groundwater Conditiuns
A very minor trickle of groundwater scepage (Icss than 0.25 gpm)out of the cut was observed on
Scptcmber 5, 2007, at the southcast comer of the building footprint excavation on the Reference
Site. This sceping groundwatcr was perching on top of the underlying fine sandy silt deposit
which was of extremcly low pernicability.
Wc cxpcct thc groundwatcr conditions at thc subjcct projcct sitc to be similar to thosc at the
Refcrcnce Site. "I'he ncar-suri'ace perched groundwater would uctuate seasonally, dcpending on
LIU & ASSOCIATES, INC.
i ;
