.
Technical Bulletin # 104
 Polyiso R-value Determination Methods
MRX.
There are at least two R-value conditianing methods currently in use for Polylsocyanurate
(Polyiso) foam. Bo[h methods aie outlined in the turrent version of ASTM C1289
"5[andard Spetlfication for Faced Rigfd CeUular Polyisocyanura[e Thermal Insula[ion
Board". This standard covers Commercfal and Residentlal Poly(so foam insulatlon produc[s
as well as Roofing, Sheathing, Cavity Wall and Exposed products. A produc[ could be a
Residential or CommerUal Produc[as well as a Roofing, SheatMng, Caviry Wall or Ezposed
Product.
The first conditloning method is frequently referred to as PIMA (Potyisocyanuro[e
Insulation Manufacturers Assocfation) 1CL n this me[hod sample boards are condi[ioned
for 180 days at 73 ./•4`F(23 +/- 2'q and 50 /• 5%relative humidiry prlor ta testing or
at least 90 days a[ 140 +/• 2'F(60 G 1°C)dry hea[ prior[o testlng. Once Ihe boards have
been condilioned their R-value is measured using ASTM C777, Q36, or C518, This was[he
Indus[ry standard me[hod for more than a dxade and con[inues ro be[he standard for all
impermeably faced products. These are ASTM C1289 Type I (aluminum(oil on bo[h sides)
products.
Impermeably faced products may be used both in commerclal roofing and sheathing
applications as well as in residentlal roofing and sheathing applications.
