Subsurfcce Exploration and
?0?6 Grand Avenue Georechnical Engineenng Report
6verert 1Vasltin¢ron Design Recommendationt
7 ] Temporarv Cut Slopes j
It is anticipated that building excavation will be close to property lines. Therefore, temporary
cut slopes will not be feasible along die north, south, west, and east properry lines.
Temporary or permanent shoring will be necessary to establish desired foundation grades, and
protect existing structures and utilities. Excavation wi:l fikely encounter ground water
seepa;es at varying depths across the site. AES[ should be consulted to provide temporary or
permanent shoring recommendations once buitding desi2n plans have been created.
8.0 STRUCTURAL FILL
The piacement of structural fill is not anticipated for this project. However, if the project
design changes or conditions warrant, the following recommendations should be foUowed. All
references to structural fill in this rport refer to subgrade preparation, fill rype, placement,
and compaction of materials as discussed in this section. If a percentage of compaction is
specified under another section of this report, the value eiven in that section should be used.
Structural fill is defined as non-organic soil, a=ceptable to the geotechnicai engineer, placed in
maximum 8-inch loose lifts, with each lift being compacted to at least 95 percent of the
modified Proctor mazimum densiry using ASTM:D 1557 as the standard.
The contractor should note that any proposed fill soils must be evaluated by AESI prior to their
use in filis. This vould require that we have a sample of die materiai 48 hours in advance of
filling activities to perform a Proctor test and determine its field compaction standard. Soils in
which the amount of fine-grained material (smaller than ido. 2Q0 sieve) is greater than
approximately 5 perce.c (measured on the minus No. 4 sieve size) should be considred
moisture-sensitive. Use of mois[ure-sensitive soils i❑ structural f Ils should be limited to
favorable dry weather and dry subgrade conditions. The on-site soils generally contained trace
w moderate amounts of silt and are considered slightly moisture tolerant. The use of on-site
excavated soils for structural fill will likely be suitable excepc durine and immediately
following vet weather.
A representatice from our firm should inspect die s[ripped subgrde and be present during
ptacement of structural fill to observe thc work and perform a representative number of in-
place densiry tests. In tlis vaa, the adequacy of the earthwork may be evaluated as filling
;rogresses, and any problem areas may be corrected at that time. It is important to understand
that taking random compaction tests on a part-time basis will not assure uniformity or
acceptable performance of a fill.
