r
APPENDIX B
LABORATORY ANALYSIS
General
We completed laboratory analyses on selected soil samples obtained in the explorations. A series of
gradation tests have been conducted to determine the grain -size distribution of the soil samples. A Direct
Shear test was also conducted on one soil sample to evaluate the strength envelope of the upper site soils,
and to aid in slope stability analysis. The laboratory analyses were perfornmed to aid in our interpretation
and understanding of the subsurface soils and their engineering properties.
Grain -size — Gradations (ASTNI D-136)
The distribution of soil particles larger than 75 lun (retained on the No. 200 sieve) was determined by
sieving. The samples were dried in an oven overnight to determine the moisture content. The dried soil
was then allowed to pass through sieves of different sizes. The soil retained on each sieve was then
weighed and the weight was compared to the original amount of soil to determine the grain size
distribution of the sample. The gradation test results are shown in Figures B-1 through B-8 in this
appendix.
Direct Shear — (ASTNI D-3080)
A direct shear test was also perfmrnmed on a soil sample obtained from Boring B 2 at 20.0 feet. The
propose of the test was to obtain the internal friction angle and cohesion values for use in our slope
stability analyses. The direct shear test results are presented in Figures B 9.
NELSON GEOTECHNICAL ASSOCIATES, INC.
y1
