Geotechnical Engineering ( ort J-1280
Johnson Residence Addition 27 February 2002
Everett, Washington Page 2
larger deck will be constructed in its place. The approximate site configuration and the proposed
locations of the dwelling and deck additions are shown on Figure 1, the Site and Exploration
Plan.
SITE CONDITIONS
The site conditions for the project were evaluated in January and February 2002. The
surface and subsurface conditions are described below, while the exploration procedures and
interpretive logs of the explorations are presented in Appendix A. Laboratory testing procedures
and results are presented in Appendix B.
Surface Conditions
The property is located on a parcel east of Harbor Lane and west of Belvedere Lane. A
single family dwelling is situated at the southwest end of the property and is accessed from
Harbor Lane. Much of the property has a gentle to moderate slope down to the north. A
relatively steep slope with approximately 35 feet of relief extends below the eastern side of the
property down to Belvedere Lane.
Much of the property supports lawn and ornamental planting beds. The slope between
the dwelling and Belvedere Lane was mantled with brush and blackberry bushes. We did not
observe surface water on site during our site visits. The property lacks evidence of surface water
erosion or soil instability. There is an accumulation of landscaping waste at the top of the slope
below the northeast portion 3f the deck.
Subsurface Conditions
The subsurface exploration consisted of advancing one boring (B-1) and excavating one
hand auger exploration (HA-1) at the approximate locations shown on Figure 1. The
explorations were located so as to allow the development of a subsurface profile of the slope
extending below the proposed dwt!ling and deck additions. Soil descriptions presented in this
report are based on the subsurface conditions encountered at specific exploration locations.
Variations in subsurface conditions may exist between the exploration locations and the nature
and extent of variations between the explorations may not become evident until construction. If
variations then appear, it may be necessary to reevaluate the recommendations of this report.
Boring B-1, advanced off the northeast comer of the proposed addition, encountered
approximately 6 inches of very loose, moist to wet, brown silty sand topsoil with some roots and
trace gravel. Below the topsoil, very soft, moist to wet, brown, sandy silt to very loose silty sand
with trace gravel and organics was encountered. This soil was interpreted as full and extended to
approximately 5 feet below the ground surface. Below the fill material, a soft, moist to wet, dark
brown, sandy silt and loose silty sand with trace gravel and organics was encountered and
appeared to be a relic topsoil horizon. Loose, moist to wet, mottled light brown, silty sand with
some gravel was encountered below the relic topsoil horizon, from approximately 6.5 feet to 13
Zinoer Zeman Associates, Inc.
18905 33rd Avenue West, Suite 117 Lynnwood, W►shingion 98036 (425) 771 •3304 O
Iq
