Geotechnical Engineering Study
Mahan Residence
4800 Block of Harbor Lane
Everett, Washington
1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The proposed Mahan Residence is planned to be 7 )rated in an existing single-family residential subdivision in
the 48M block of Harbor Lane in Everett, Washington. We understand that the proposed residence will be a
three-story, wood -framed structure stepped into the existing natural grade.
The lot configuration and building location is shown on the attached Fxploration Location Plan, Figure 2. This
plan is based on a drawing prepared by Mead Gilman and Associates, dated October 24, 1998. Driveway access
to the site will be from the west side of Harbor Lane. Finish building elevations were not available at the time of
our study. However, we understand the structure will be stepped into the native grade with lower foundation
walls approaching heights of 12 feet. Also, based on our previous experience with similar structures, we expect
that perimeter load -bearing walls will cant' between 2 and 4 kips per lineal foot and that isolated spread footings
may carry loads of up to 50 kips. The steep, west -facing slope outside of the building site will be reserved as
open space.
T'he recommendations contained in the following sections of this report are based on preliminary site
development inform-ttion. We should review final design drawings and specifications to verify that our
recommendations have been properly interpreted and incorporated into project design.
2.0 SCOPE OF WORK
On November 13, 1998, we drilled 2 test borings to depths of 14.0 and 10.5 feet below existing surface grades
and made a reconnaissance of the immediate area. Using the information obtained from the subsurface
exploration and site reconnaissance, we performed analyses to develop preliminary geotechnical
recommendations for project design and construction. Specifically, this report addresses the following:
• Soil and groundwater conditions
• Site preparation and grading
• Geologic hazards
• Foundation design
• Lateral earth pressures
• Surface and subsurface drainage
• Pavements
