J . KEITH CROSS, P.E.
Geotechnical Engineering Consultanl
(425) 747-2150
6358 121" Avenue SE, Bellevue, V'ashington 98006-4425
October 22, 2008
JOK-u
Gary Conard
Conard Construction, Inc.
13404 4'" Place SE
Snohomish, Washington 9829021
Geotechnical Engineering Construction Monitoring, Deck Replacement, Joe Johnston
Residence, 4816 Harbor Lane, Everett, Wahinyton Project No. 9463-001
This letter summarizes geotechnical construction monitoring for the above referenceC roject.
On October 20 and 22, 2008, I made visits to the above referenced site to observe the bearing
soil for pier footings for the two replacement decks under construction. Two locations had been
excavated for the southwest corner deck, with three locations for the northwest corner deck. Per
the structural drawings I reviewed, and discussed with the siructural engineer, these pier footings
were designed as 24-inch diameter piers, with an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf.
This was an allowable bearing pressure postulated as available in my July 29, 2008 letter.
At my October 20, 2008 visit, it was my opinion that the two pier excavations fo the
southwestern corner deck had been excavated into a firm native bearing soil with an allowable
bearing pressure in excess of 2,000 psf. I also observed the soils exposed in the excavations for
the three northwestern corner deck, but was not convinced that they were excavated through fill
soils into the firm native soils. The two western excavations may have reached the required
aliowable bearing, but the eastern location was still based in fill at that time.
On October 22, 2008, I observed the soils exposed in the fuRher excavated three pier locations
for the nohtivestem ccmer deck. It was my opinion that :! ese pizr =xcavatio: is for the
northwestern corner deck had now been excavated into a firm native bearing soil with an
allowable bearing pressure in excess of 2,000 psf. I indicated that loosened soils should be
removed from the base of the excavation prior to concrete placement.
I trust that this input meets your needs at this time. if there are any questions concerning this
letter, or if we can provide additional services, please call.
Yours very lruly,
/i✓/ N"
' J.
