NELSON AND ASSOCIATES, INC.
Consulting Engineering Geology
October 27, 1988
Project No. 13288
Page 7
structural fill is recommended. This would consist of stripping of the
surficial fill and topsoils (about 2 to 5 feet thick) down to the suitable
native soils, and replacement up to desired finish subgrade with structural
fill. Pavement could then De placed upon the prepared area using conventional
crushed rock base and asphaltic surfacing. Alternatively. the existing fitl
could De compacted as we11 as possible at proposed subgrade elevation, and the
conventional crushed rock base and asphaltic surfacing placed. If this
alternative is utilized, future repair to the pavement surface may be
necessary, due to long term, sporadic consolidation and settlement expected
within the fill materials.
Structural fill placed within the site area should be placed upon a prepared
subgrade. The subgrade should be free of all organic, loose and wet soils,
and in a dense unyielding state prior to olacement of the structural fill. Ne
suggest the structural fill consist of granular, pit-run type soils, generally
approved for use in the area. The structural fi11 should be placed in 6 to 8
inch lifts, and compacted to 95% of ASTM D-1557, modified proctor within
structure areas, and to 90% of ASTM 0-1557. modified proctor within pavement
areas. Al1 structural fill should be placed at or within 2 of otimum
moisture content.
Additional Notes
Earthwork development within the site area, including excavations, strurtural
filling, foundation placement and drainage should be observed and approved by
the geotechnical consultant.
Although we do expect site soil types, conditions and distributions to reflect
our findings, some variations could occur. Should conditions other than those
discussed herein be encountered, the geotechnical consultant should De
notified for review and comment. Additional or alternative recomnendations
may be required.
