117 Insulation
1311.1 Instaliation Requirements: All insulation materials
shall be instailed accading to the manufaAurers inshuclions
to achieve pioper densrties, maintam clearances, and maintain
unAorm R-values. To the mapmum extent posside, insulation
shall extend over Ihe full component area to the intended R-
value.
1311.2 RoollCeiling Insulation: Open-bbwn or poured loose-
fill insitlation may be used in attic spaces where Oie slo?e d
the ceiling is not more than 3/12 and ihere is at least thirty
inches of clear distance from the top of the botlan chad of the
truss or ceiling joist to the underside of Pie sheathing at the
roof ridge. When eave vents are installei, baffling .f ihe vent
openings shall be provided so as to deflect the incaaing air
above the surface of the insulation.
Where lighting fiztures are recessed into a suspended or
exposed grid ceiling, the mdlceiling assembly shall be
msulated m a low6on other than directly on the suspended
ceiling
Exception: Type IC rated recessed lighting fixtures.
Where installed in wood framing, faced batt insulation
shall be face stapled.
1711.3 WaIllnsiAation: Extenor wall cavities isolated dving
framing shall be fully insulated to the levds of lhe suvounding
valls. When installed in wood framing, faccai baV msulation
shall be (ace stapled.
Above grade extr.nor insulation shall be protected.
1311.4FIoorinsulaUon: Floorinsulationshallbeinstalledin
a permanern manrer in subslantial contact with the sudace
being insulated. Insulation supports shall be installed so
spacing is not more than iwenty-four inches on center.
Installed insulation shatl not block th2 airtlow ihrough
foundation venis.
1317.5 Slah•On•Grade Floor: Slatron-grade insulation
installed inside the foundaUon wall shatl elend dowmvard from
the top of the slab a minimum distance of M1venty4our inches or
to the lop of the footing, whichever is less. Insulation installed
outside the loundation shall extend downward a minimum of
twenry-four inches or to the fiostline. whichever is greater.
Abwe grade insulation shall be protected.
Ezception: For monolithic slabs, the insulation shall
extend downward from ihe top of the slab totlie
bottom ot the (ooting.
1311.6 Radiant Floors (on or below grade: Slabon-grade
insulation shall entend dowrnvard from the lop of ihe slab a
minimum distance of ihirty-six inches or dowrnvard to the top d
ihe footing and Mrimntal for an aggregate of not less than
ihirry-six inches.
If required by the building official where soil condilions
warrant such insulation, the entire area of a radiant 9oor shall
be thertnally isolated from the soil. Where a soil gas control
system s provided below the radiant fbor, which results in
increased convective flow bdow the radiant floor, ihe radiant
Iloor shall be thermally isolated from the suAoor gravel layer.
1J12 Glaang and Doors
1312.1 Standard Procedum for Determination of Glazing
and Door U-Factors: U-lactors for glazing and doors shall be
determmed. certdied and labeled in accordance with Standard
RS-37 by a certilied independent agency licensed by the
Nalimal Fenestration Pating Coundl (NFRC). Compliance
shall be based on the Residential or ihe Nonresidential M19odel
5ze
Product sanples used for U-'ractor determinatior,s shall be
production line units or repr^_sentaMe of urrt as purchased by
the wnsumer a conVactr,r. Unlabeled aang and doors shall
be assigned the default U-factor in S=::inn 2006.
1312.2 Solar Heat Gain Coefficient and Shading
CceHicient Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), shall be
dMermincd, certified and labeled in accordance vnththe
Nationl Fenestration Ratmg Counal (NFRC) Standard by a
certified, independent a7ency, licensed by the NFRC.
Ezception: Shading coeffioents (SC) shall be an
acceptade aHernate for c«nMlance wiih solar heat
gain coelfioent requirements. Shading coeffidems
for glazirg shall be taken Irom Chapter 27 of
Standard R527 or from the manu(adurer's test data.
1 J73 Moisture Control
1313.1 Vapor Retarders: Vapor retarders shall be mstalled on
lhe warm side (in winter) of insulaGon as required by this
section
Exceptlon: Vapor retarder installed with nd mae
than 1/3 d the rwminal R-value between it and the
conditioned space.
113.2 RooflCeiling Assemblies: Roof/ceiling assemblies
•diere ihe ventilalion space above the insulation is less than
an average of twelve inches shall 6e provided with a vapor
retarder. Roof/ceiling assemblies wAhewt a vented airspace.
where neilher the roof deck nor the roof stmcWre are made of
wood, shall provide a continuous vapor retarderwith taped
seams.
Exception: Vapor retarders need not be prwided
where all of the insulation is installed between tY.e
roof inembrane anC the sirudural roof deck
1317.7 Walls: Wails separating conditioned space from
unconditiond space shail be provided wAh a vapor retarder.
1J13.4 Floors: Floors separating conddioned space from
unconditioned space shall be provided with a vapor retarder.
1313.5 Crewl Spaces: A gmund cover of six mil (0.006 inch
thick) black polyethylene or approved equal shal be laid over
the ground within crawl spaces. The ground cover shall be
ovedapped twelve inches minnium at the joints and shall
eMend to the loundation wall.
Eaception: The ground cover may be omitted in
crawl spaces if the crawl space has a concrete slab
Iloor wdh a minonum thickness of three and one-half
inches.
1314 Air Leakage
1314.1 Building Envelope: The requirements of this sedion
shall apply to building elenents separating conddioned from
unconditioned spaces. Extenorjoints around windavs and
door frames, openings belween walls and foundation. between
walls and roof and wall panels; openings at penetrations of
ulility services through walls, floors, and roofs: and all other
openings in the building envelope shall be sealed, caulked,
gasketed, or weatherSnpped to limit air leakage.
1314.2 Glaang and Doors: Doors and operable glazing
separaling conditioned from unconditioned space shall be
weatherstripped. Pixed windavs shall be tight fiRing with gWss
retained by stops with sealarA or caulking all around.
Exception: Openings that are required to befire
resislant.
1374.3 8uilding Assemblies Used as Ducts or Plenums:
Buildirg assemblies used as ducts a plenums shall be sealed,
caulked, and gaskeled to limit air leakage.
