1311 Insulation
1371.1 InsWlWtion Requirnments: All insulation materials
shall be installed accordirg to the manufadurer's instructions
to achieve proper densdies, maintain clearances, and maintain
undorm R-values. To the mazmum extent possible, insulation
shall ectend over the full component area to the intended R-
value.
7317.2 RooflCeiling Insulation: Open-bbwn or poured loose-
fill insuiation may be used in attic spaces where the slope d
the ceiling 5 not more than 3/12 and there is at least thirty
inches of clear distance from the top of the bottan chad of the
lruss or ceiling jdst to the underside of the sheathirg at the
roof ridge. When eave vents are ireta!led, baf9irg of the vent
openings shall be pnvided so as to de lect the incoming air
above the surtace cf the insulation.
Where lighting fixtures are recess irrio a suspended or
exposed grid ceiling, the roof/ceiling assembly shall be
insulated in a lowGon other than directly on the suspertled
ceiling.
Exception: Type C rated recessed hgMing 5xtures.
Where installed in wood framing, faced batl insulation
shall be face staoled.
1371.3 Wall Insulafion: Extenor wall cavities isolated during
framing shall be fully insulated to the levds of the surtounding
was. When installed in wood traming, faced batl insulation
shall be face stapled.
Above grede extenor insulation shl be protected.
1311.4FIoorinsulation: Floorinsulationshalbeinstalledin
a permanent manner in substaMial contact with ihe suAace
being ireulated. Insulation supporis shall be installed so
spacing is not more than twenty4our inches on center.
Instatled insulation shall not block the aiAlowthrough
toundation vents.
13I1,551ab•On•GradeFloor: Slalron-gradeinsulation
installed inside the foundation wall shall extend dowmvard from
the top of the slab a minimum distance of venry-fov mches a
to the top of the fooling, whichever is less. Insulation installed
outside the foundation shall exlend downward a minimum d
twenty-four inches or to Ihe fmstline, whichever is greater.
Above grade insulation shall be protected.
Ezception: Fa monolithic slabs, the insulation shall
extend dowmvard (rom Uie top of the slab tothe
6oriom of the fooling.
131 t.6 Radin[ Floors (on or below grade): Slatrorngrade
insulation shall extend dowrnvard (rom ihe top ot the slab a
minimum distance of thirty-six inches or dowrnvard to the top d
ihe footing and horizontal for an aggregate o( not less than
thirty-six inches.
If required b tlm buildng offcial where soil conditions
wanant such msulation, ihe entire area of a radiant Boor shall
be thermally isolaled from the sdl. Where a soil gas control
syslan is provided below the radiant fbor, which results in
inereased conveclive flav bdow the radiant floor, the radiant
Ooor shall be thertnally isolated from the sutrflow gravel layer.
1372 Glaang and Doors
1J12.1 Standard Procedure for Determination of Glazing
and Door U•Factors: U-factors'orglazing and doors shall be
determincd, certdied and labeled in aanrdance wdh Slandard
RS-31 by a certifed independent agency licensed by the
IJational Fenesiration Rffiing Candl (NFRC). Compliance
shall be based en the Residen6al or the Nonresidential Model
Size
ProtlUGI sanples usE ror u-tactor tletertninations shall be
production lire units or representatNe of unAs as purchased by
the consumer or contractor. Unlabeled daang and dows shall
be assigned the default U-factor in Sxtion 206.
1312.2 Solar Heat Gain Ccecient and Shading
Ccefficient Solar Heat Gain Ccefficient (SHGC), shall be
determined, certified and labeled in accordance with lhe
National Fenectration Rating Cwndl (NFRC) Standard by a
certified, independent agency, licensed by the NFRC.
Ezception: Shading coeffideMs (SC) shall be an
acceptade alternate for canpliance with solar heat
gain wefident requirements. Shading coeffiaeMs
for glazing shall be taken fran Chapter 27 of
Standard RS-27 w from the mawfadurer's test data.
7313 Moisture Control
1313.7 Vapor Retarders: Vapor reWrders shal be installed on
Ihe wartn side(in winter) of insulalion as required by this
section.
ExcepBon: Vapor retarder insta0ed with not mae
than 1l3 d the nominal R-value between d and the
conditioned space.
1313.2 RooflCeilingAssemblies: Roof/ceiling assemblies
where the venlilation space abwe lhe insulation is less than
an average of twelve inches shall beprovided vnth a vapor
retarder. Roof/ceiling assemblies whhout a vented airspace,
where neither the roof deck nor the roof structure are made of
wood, shall provide a continuous vapor retarder with taped
searns.
Ezception: Vapa retarders need not be provided
where all of the insulation is installed beiween the
roof mcmbrane and the structural roof deck
1313.3 Walls: Watls separating conditioned space from
imconditloned space shall be provided wdh a vapor retarW_r.
1377.4 Floors: Floors separating conditioned space from
unconditioned space shatl be provided with a vapor rE,arder.
1313.5 Crawl Spaces: A ground cover of six mil (0.006 inch
thick) black polyethylene or apprrned equal shall be laid over
the ground wilhin crawl spaces. The ground cover shall be
ovedapped twelve inches mininum al the joints and shall
eMend to the (oundation wall.
Exception: The ground cover may be omitted in
crawl spaces if the crawl space has a concrete slab
floorwdh a minimum thickness ol thrre and one-half
inches
1374 Air Leakage
7314.1 Building Envelope: The requiremeMso(thissection
shall apply to 6uilding elenents separa6ng conditioned 6om
unconditioned spaces. Ezteriorjoints arond windows and
door lrames, openings between watls and foundation, between
walls and roof and wall panels; openings at penetrations of
Wility services through walis, floas, and roo(s; and all other
openings in the building envelope shall be sealed, caulked,
gasketed, a weather5ripped tc limit air leakage.
1314.2 Glaang and Doors: Doors and operable glazing
separating conditioned from urxonditionetl space shall be
wea;herstripped. Fixed windows shall be tight fitting with glass
retainvi by siops with sealarri or caulkirg all around.
Exception: Openings that are required to be fire
resistant
1314.3 Building /.ssemblies Used as Ducts or Plenums:
Building asselies used as ducts a penums shall be sealed,
cau!ked, :3nd gasketed to limit air leakage.
