CASCADE GEOTECHNICAL INC.
June 2, 1994
8.5 Lateral IRsrtb Pressures
Job No. 9405.02G
We understand that both rigid retaining walls and flexible retaining walls are proposed for the
project. Following are preliminary lateral earth pressures to be used for the structural design
of these walls:
At -rest Pressure (rigid retaining wall that cannot
deflect during backfilling, horizontal
bacislope, equivalent fluid pressure) 60 pcf
At -rest Pressure (rigid retaining wall that cannot
deflect during backfilling, 2H:1V
backslope, equivalent fluid pressure) 85 pcf
Active PMUure (flexible retaining wall that is
free to deflect during backfilling, horizontal
backslope, equivalent fluid pressure) 35 pcf
Active Preshare (flexible retaining wall that is
free to deflect during backfilling, 2H:1 V
backslope, equivalent fluid pressure) 55 pcf
Passive Pressure (flexible retaining wall that is
free to deflect during backfilling, horizontal
foreslope, equivalent fluid pressure) 400 pef
A coefficient of base friction value of 0.35 may be used in the design of proposed wall footings.
The following assumptions were udlin-d in our analysis:
1) The earth pressure values presented above are pressures mobilized at soil Mum.
2) The pressures given here assume that free -draining imported fill will be placed and
13
