To: City Field Inspector
From: fmpression Design, Doug Bngelson. Architect
Date: 5-24-07
RE: Marilyn Blackhurn 4-I'lcx
2i jl.iA'Ti v
Hs--34—Gcr,, 3
CC: Pcrry Martin, Marilyn I3lackburn
1%
. ,, ,, ,
/ _ - /'-r/I /2i
Dear Sir,
1 commend you for tie line work ou arc Joing. I laving a city inspector Iuking over
the construction has proved a gmat valuc in Uie many projects with which I havc bcen
associated.
Thank you for noting the yuestionable notches to two floor joists. One is above thc
dining area in Unit 'A'. '1'he Contractor is hercby instructed to emedy it by attaching a
scab 2x 10 x 4'-0" centered over thc side of the notch (using a solid '/z" plywood spacei;
glued :uid two rows of 3" deck screws at 6" o.c. staggercd. Pmdrill the scab if necessary
.i , to prevent spliuing. '1'he other notched iloor joist is above the garage in Unit `C'. I'lease
find attached calculation dated 5-24-07 showing this notch is acceptable with no remedy.
Regarding your note to strap the top of glu-lam beams in all units to the top plates, 1
am hereby instructing the Contractor not to, (avoiding unnecessary nailing and possible
splitting in the top plates). All thcse beams will be secured in place by the wall framing
preventing the bcam from rotating in addition to ilre GWB ceiling holding the top in
place and the GWl3 wall tinish bcing nailed to the beam holdmg the bottom in place. An
example of a bcum that does need additional securing tir stability would be an open post
to on beam connection, -to which 1 would specity something like a Simpson "CC"
column cap at the bottom of the beam and something like Simpson "H 1" hurricane
anchors at the top of the beam. I encourage you to discuss the matter with Plans
\ Gxaminer Steve Miller, a licensed engineer. However, thank you for bringing this to
\ attention. —it is good for me to review things like this.
Also. plcase find attacheJ detail Jatcd -21-07 showing tire rated gypsum sheathing
extending to the imderside of the roof deck.
And, I hcreby authorize deleting onc of the tvo layers of `typ. tirc rated 5/8" gYp•
shthg. bd.' that are shown sandwiched bctween the two stud frames in Detail 1 on Sheet
30.
lf you have any questions, f'ecl Gee to contact me.
I,; ;,I'11 _ ,
IUr 1I:)L_IJ\J . 1
4 20Ui Iv
JUN 0 J
CITY OF FVEFiETT
Pcrmit `.=r,,;ce,s
Sincereh.
S1+iE0F
•
Douglas E.
