Providence Phasing Strategy (December 1, 2004)
Providence Everett Medical Center (PEMC) has cared for the health care needs of our
community for 100 years. Enhancing these services in a rapidly growing Snohomish
County mandates that we modernize and expand if we are to fulfill this mission for the
next 100 years. Our Master Site Plan, developed over three years of careful study, is the
roadmap to ensuring that PEMC grows in ways that are compatible with the needs of our
patients, staff and community.
PEMC has no choice b_ut to expand. Our hospital is very close to capacity and in need of
modernization. With Snohomish County expected to grow by 50% over the next 20
years, our hospital must expand and modernize to keep pace or our citizens will
increasingly need to go to Seattle or elsewhere to get much of their treatment. After a
comprehensive and exhaustive. three year process to evaluate growth options, it has
become clear that the only feasible option for expansion is the Colby Campus.
Our Medical Center on Colby has been part of the neighborhood for some 80 years, and
we wish it to remain so. We do all we can to be good neighbors to local residents and
businesses and believe we have been. As Everett grows so rapidly, finding new places to
build is proving increasingly difficult. And, frankly, building a new medical center from
scratch is financially prohibitive for PEMC. This plan was developed with the intent to
minimize the impact to our neighbors, while at the same time meeting the healthcare
needs of our community. The PEMC Master Site Plan is phased accordingly;
Phase 1: Complete — Opened Mothers Day 2002
The Pavilion for Women and Children, located on the Pacific Campus, offers a state-of-
the-art family birthing center, newborn intensive care unit, pediatric services, Children's
Center, midwifery care, a Comprehensive Breast Center, Family Resource Center, and
Providence Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic.
Phase 2A: Completion 2007
In this phase PEMC proposes to develop and construct a community cancer center in
partnership with local physician groups. As part of the cancer center, the facility will
also- provide medical physician office space and a 600 car parking garage. Included in
this hase will be the removal of the 21 of 22 Donovan block homes (Block 248), which
are currently owned by PEMC. This block will be used for interim surface parking and
staging as the plan is executed.
Phase 2B: Completion 2007
In this phase PEMC proposes to expand the emergency department and operating room
capacity.
Phase 3: Completion 2010
In this phase PEMC proposes to develop an expansion bed tower. This structure will
accommodate expansion for radiology, surgery, cardiology, sleep services, intensive care,
respiratory, laboratory, pharmacy, medical and surgical nursing beds.
