Hanson,
On October 24, 1983 , I made two trips to the above referenced
site to observe soil conditions in the excavation. I had
requested that a backhoe be present during my site visit. The
backhoe had equipment failure, thus necessitating my second trip.
The house site sits at the edge of a ravine that has been
filled creating a relatively level bench. The fill slopes down at
an estimated 1 .5 :1 (Horizontal:Vertical) slope to the 'bottom of
the ravine. The house site was excavated and a oortion of the
fill dumped over the slope. Two test pits wer= excavated by your
contractor in the house excavation site. The south pit indicated
five to seven feet of miscellaneous earth fill in that area. The
r.a::ve scil was a gray dense aravelly sand. There were only minor
amounts of seepaqe into the pit. The other pit on the north side
of the excavation was about ten feet deep and partially filled
with water at the time of our site visit. You reported that the
; same gray soil was encountered in the south pit at the bettom.
Because the test pit did not penetrate below a ten foot depth, we
cannot be assured that the fill i not deeper in this area.
Pier Design
It is our opinion that the house should be supported on
drilled pier foundations. Typically your contractor, Bowen Auger
Service, uses a si:cteen (1G) inch diameter drill.
