June 12, 2013
The regular meeting of the Everett City Council was called to order at
6:30 p.m., June 12, 2013, in the City Council Chambers of the Everett City
Hall, Council President Moore presiding. Upon roll call it was found that
Mayor Stephanson and Council Members Roberts, Moore, Murphy,
Gipson, Stonecipher, and Affholter were present. Council Member Bader
was excused.
Boy Scouts John and Paul Gaston led the Pledge of Allegiance.
The minutes of the June 5, 2013, City Council meeting were approved as
printed. Council Member Gipson abstained from the vote.
MAYOR
The Mayor commented on the possible state government shutdown if the
Legislature fails to pass a budget. He stated that there is no sense of
emergency in terms of the City's ability to deliver service; however, should
a shutdown occur and continue for some period of time, revenue streams
could be temporarily interrupted. The Mayor also stated he was notified
today by Washington State University that three additional degree
programs, slated to start in August, will be delayed a year due to time
constraints as a result of inaction by the Legislature.
COUNCIL
Council Member Stonecipher commented that she attended the meeting
of the Board of Park Commissioners last evening where a record
attendance of 13,800 people was reported for this year's Sorticulture
event. She expressed appreciation for the exceptional work done by the
cultural arts staff.
Council Member Roberts echoed comments about the success of
Sorticulture this summer. He also commented on the question of federal
sequestration and asked that any information received by administration
be shared with council members, especially as it relates to the defense
presence in the community.
161
