The proposed house ia a two-story wood
framed structure with a basement. The ground floor, including
the garage, covers aUout 2000 square feet of area. The site is
on a bluff overlooking the Glennwood Creek Valley. Geological
Services Inc. in Cheir report of April 14, 1984 to Barghausen
Consulting Engineers Inc, identified this lot as requiring
special study.
The lot is one lot north of a cut in the slope for a sewer line.
This cut reveals a soil stratigraphy of dense fine to medium
grained sands to a depth of about 20 feet overlying a hard ,
factured clay . 4'ater seepage was observed at the sand - cla}
contact . On the subjecY. lot the sand was exposed in the '
excavation and there is a small bench on the slope at about the
sand - clay contact. Seepage of groundwater occurs on the bench. ;
i
The sand exposed in the excavation is capable of supporting the
2000 psf design load . No visual signs of instability on this
loe were noted during our reconnaissance , Tree stumps several
hundred years old are present on the slope. It is our
professional opinion that the house may be constructed in its
proposed location provided no fill is placed on the slope and
water from roof and footing drains is directed away from the
slope. Natural vegetaCion growth on the slope should be
encouraged . The :;oil stratigraphy : s one that has been
problematic in the Puget Sound area. The groundwater lubricates
the clay at the interface and careates a weak zone . Thus ,
 building on a slope such as this involves some risk.
