I am the Plumbin� and Se�er �nspector for the City of Everett� N'ashington. and as s� ch, have charge o£ the inapeciion of gas inetellationa within the corp�srate limits of the Ci{y of Everett. I inspected the gae installation at the H�;cmire Apar{ments� 3406 Colby Avenue� Everet�. at ihe time the oil burning furn�cz wns converted to Qas on April 3� 1959. 7he iretallation as a whole wns Qood. The fire box was clean� the chimney w»s clean and sufficient permanent air waE supplied t'or combustion. On Jenu�ry 20� 1?65� nn incident occurred in ihis building in which two persona� sleeping in a room in the basement acros� a pass�ge way from the furnaco room, were nearly aephyxiated. The City Firemen nnd rep�esentativee from the N�ashington PJniural G�s Company were in ihe basement and had the furrk.ce closed off anA the baeement door and windowa upen when � arriv�d. The basement� at this time� wes well aired and still very werm. h repr�srnfative of the W s Compeny, �r. Gilbert LQYoung� informed ma ihe; ihe therrtnstat which controlled the furnace wa:; found in an extremely high positio� which caused iha furnece to fire exGessively. I caused e thorough investiqation of the gas service piping and the furnace to be made under my direction. The gas aervice piping vms £ound in excellent condition aa wae the furnace. I c�used the vent pipe to be ranaved from the chimney and it wae found that two (2) bricka had fallen from eome p�int in the chimnay and had lodged �t the v�nt pipe openinq.
