The on•-site
soils are generally silty and thus are moisture
sensitive. Grading operations will be difficult whe the
moisture content of these soils exceeds the optimum
moisture content.
' The moisture content of the existing sandy site fill
soils must be at or near the optimum moisture content as
they cannot be consistentiy compacted to the required
' density when the moisture content is greater than
optimum. Based on the site topography, we do not
anticipate that any native soils will be excavated except
for possibly utility trenches. The native soils are not
suitable for structural fill , including utility trench
backfill . The soil placed bY eurlington Northern on the
west side of the property is predominately silt and
should not be used for structural fill .
The moisture content of the on-site fill soils at the
, time of our expiorations was generally near the
estimeted optimum moisture content. our explorations
were conducted during a long period of dry weather. The
, existing sandy fill soils, which are frce of debris and
organics , could be used as structural fill if grading
operations are conducted during dry weather and when
drying of the wet soils by aeration is possible.
During excessively dry weather it may be necessary to add
Nater to achieve optimum moisture content.
Moisture sensitive soils may also be susceptible to
excessive softening end "pumping" from construction
equipment traffic when the maisture content is greater
than the optimum moisture content.
Structural fill which is to be pleced. in Net weather should
consist of a granular soil having no more than five (5)
. percent silt or clay particles . The percentage of particles
passing the No.200 sieve should be measured from that portion
of the soil passing the three-quarter-inch sieve. We
recommend that at least 12 inches of granular fill be placed
over the native silts in structural or pavement areas . This
is most critical if the work takes place during wet weather .
GEOTECH CONSULTANTS , INC.
