. .
Mr. Tim Tyler
Page 2
June 19, 1991
2. istinq Corridors and A.quir•a azits
A. Please see the attached floor plans that have been colored
to indicate one-hour smoke, one-hour, two-fiour, and four-
hour seperations. If these plans are acceptable, please
return them to our office so we may incorporate them into
the conetruction documents.
The one-hour smoke aeparations have been indicated vith
the color purple. The maximum dimension is the east-west dimension of
Surqery and is 150 feet.
The requirement in Section 1002 (b) that requires each
conpartment to have the capacity to hold the occnpanta of
the adjacent compartwent ie intended to protect both
ambulatory and nonambulatory patients for a sufficient
amount of time to provide exitinq from that iloor and
buildinq. The ebove adjacent aquare footaqes indicate
more than an adequate capacity. To illustrate this,
suppose that every bed in the Surgery Depertment is
occupied includinq each operatinq room, even though this
is functionally impossible. This Would total 6 non-
ewbuletory patients at 30 square feet each and equals
1,080 equare feet. In addition, assume that iE there are
two additional occupants for each nonambulatory patient et
6 square feet each, this equale 412 square feet. The
total space tequired in the adjacent compartment would be
1,512 square feet. It also ehould be noted that the
adjacent emoke cowpartwants to both Emergency and Surqery
Departnents have direct exitinq to the exterior qrada as
well as additionnl smoke compartments within the 8outh
Ninq.
