We <br /> found that except for one 30-unit complex permitted in 1995, our <br /> interpretation/enforcement of the egress system has been consistent. Open breezeway <br /> connecting unenclosed stairs has been permitted when the stairs complied as exterior exit <br /> stairways(open on two or more sides) per the definition under Section 1006.33.1. <br /> As your preliminary drawings sho�v, the stairs are surrounded by the building on three <br /> sides. This configura[iun would define the stairs as interior exit stairways, and the exit <br /> enclosure provisions of Section 10053.3 would be applicable. Most important of those <br /> requirements would be: <br /> • 7'he stair enclosures would not permit any communicating openings between them <br /> per Section 1005.33.�. A corridor or intermediate room would be required. <br /> • Doors to stair enclosures should be minimum 60-minute rated assemblies with a <br /> ma�imum temperature rises of 450 degrees above ambient per Section ]005.3.3.5. <br /> Note that the provisions do not allow for a sprinkler system to decrease any required <br /> hourly rating of a door or other opening. <br /> • All openines in the exterior wall below and within 10 feet (horizontally) of <br /> unprotected openir.gs within the stair enclosures should be prorected by three-foucth- <br /> hour fire-protected assemblies per Section 1003.3.3.10.
