 APPENDIX A
( FIELD EXPLORATIONS
Subsurfaa soil snd gmund water conditions u the site wae explored by excavadn 10 test
Ipits at the approximate locations ahown in Figure 2. 'Ihe explorations wae located in the fidd
by paciug from existing siu features. Approximate elevadons ahown on the test pit loge ue
I based on t6e drawiug eadded"A Topographic Survey of the Euterly 5 Acrea of Lot 2E,Saway
Center Five for Cintas" dated 1/18l94, by GeoDimensions.
1be test pits wae eaccavated on January IQ, 1994 by FED-EX Conatcuction of Iiaca
Istaod,WasLington, using a track-mounted hydraulic excavaWr. 'Ihe test pits were acctvated to
dapths nngiog from approximatdy 7 to 9 faet below the existing ground aurface. '!be
I explorationa were backfillad with t6e excavated mataial upoa completion.
( 'Ibe explorationa wae continuously aroniwred by a gootxhnicel enginea 6rom our fum
who visually clasaified We aoila encountered, obtained represemstive soil amples, fidd ecreeaed
the soil samples for the presenx of potentislly hazardous substa►cea or petrolam 6ydrocubons,
obsaved ground water seepage conditions and prepazed a detailed log of each explorrtion. Soils
encounterod were classified in general accordance with the classification system desexibod in
Figure A-1. '17e test pit logs aze presented in Figures A-2 through Afi.
 FIELD SCREENING OF SOIL SAMPLES
Soil samples obtainad from the test pits wera scrcened in the field for evidence of
petroleam- or solvent-related contamination using (1) visual ezamiaation, (2) aheen creming,
and (3)headspace vapor saoening with a Bacharach TLV Sniffu calibrstad to hexane. 'Ie
results of headspace and sheen screentng are included in the test pit logs.
Visual screening consists of inspecting the soil for stains indicative of petroleum-rdated
contamination. Visual screening is generally more effective when contamination ia related to
heavy petroleum hydrocarbons such as motor oil or hydraulic oil or whea hydrocarbon
concentrations aze high. Sheen screening and headspace vapor scrcening aze moro seasitive
Imethods that have been effective in detecting contamination at concenuations less than regulatory
cleanup guidelines.

l
I
l
IG e o fi n j i n e e r 11 - 1 Fik No.3Il6-0Dl-R01/Q2N94
