The upper soil unit consists of a loose brown slightly <br />silty gravelly sand, identified as fill; it extends to a <br />depth of 4 ft or more. <br />2. The lowermost unit encountered is a dense tan medium <br />sand. This was found to the maximum explored depth of 7 <br />ft. <br />Groundwater was not encountered. <br />Proposed Construction We understand that a two story, wood- <br />frame single-family structure will be built on the site. Cuts <br />oi up to 17 feet in height are anticipated. <br />Conclusions and Recommendations On the basis of our investi- <br />gations at the site, we draw the fo:lowing prir.cipal concla- <br />sions: <br />1. Soils below depths of about 4 ft are rt:oderately dense <br />granular and for all practical purposes, incompressible. <br />2. We anticipate that excavation for the structure will <br />expose the bearing horizon throughout most of the building <br />areas, although it is possible that in some areas some fill <br />may remain. All foundation elements should be extended to <br />the uppermost native sand unit �hich underlies the fill. <br />Access to the bearing horizon can be achieved by piers cast <br />in open excavation or by removal and recompaction of the <br />fill. <br />3. Spread footings may be used on well-prepared undis- <br />turbed surfaces of the native sand or on compacted fill; <br />these may be designed for bearing pressures of 2000 psf. <br />4. The fill unit may be used (in its present state) for <br />su000rt of grade slab floors, given favorable weat:�er and <br />construction precautions to protect the prepared subgrade. <br />5. Excavation slopes will be cut primarily in the fill <br />material and the dense native sand which underlies it. <br />Temporary slopes in the fill material may be cut 1 vertical <br />to 1 horizontal. In the native sand they may be cut 3 ver- <br />tical to 2 horizontal. Because of the proximity of�the <br />project to the existing walls at the east property line, <br />it may prove desirable to remove at least a portion of the <br />upper retaining wall (which appears to retain fill, and <br />which is in an advanced state of outward movement). We <br />note that the excavation will aporoach to within 9 ft of <br />the existing outdoor fireplace (which belongs to the uphill <br />
