Due to a previously
buried stump falling in the line of the footing excavation,
over excavation in an area 12 ft. long and approximately 3
ft, wide was required. Once firm qray clay material was
encountered, the contractor was instructed to stop and clean
up the excavation. Following that, the contractor was
instructed t fill the excavation 30 inches deep with 2 inch
to 4 inch quarry spals. Geotechnic fabric was to beplaced
over the spals and then crushed rock to fill the void to the
point of the bottom of the footing. In actual construction,
the contractor used pea gravel which does not appear to
adversely affect the bearing of the footing.
The method used above was used as a precautionary measure to
compensate Por the over. excavation of the footing area.
While a geotechnical engineer could have been involved, it is
my opinion that such recommendations would not exceed the
construction as outlined above. The one story light
construction nature of the addition does not overload either
the existing bearing nor the gravel fill.
If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact
me at 828-614fr—
ck Driftinier AIA, Presient
The Driftmier rchitects, P.S.
cc: Mike Kelly, Contractor
Bob Anderson, Owner
; t.ki
