The source of the fu.es has
been identified as tiie Boeing Company, wher, the chemical is nse3 to clen.l
airplane parts. This has happened Caice t'.is month. Cn January 7, sne called
the Fire Uepartment to come to the house. Tney culd r.ot identify the funes,
hut recognized them as dangerous and recor,u-lended that they evacaate t?-e house.
Captain Vognild made the report. The Secaer ilepartment has a copy. The Fire
Department report indicates that they did air out the Uasement. On January 29
the Sewer Denartment had been working on the problem. They had called Boeina,
and a Boeinq engineer named Shoaalter said there had been a malfunctioning
' valve, which allotaed the liquid to escape into the seerer line. Tie said the
valve was repaired at 4:30. The Sewer Department suggested 1at i:rs. Johnson
call tlie i4ayor's Office, which she did. I`ss. Johnson sai.d tne affect of
bresthing the gas t•ras that your l.ins became numb and you werc nauseated and
' dizzy. She was told that this could also cause unconciousness and deatl. She
advised that she iiad the basement aindows and doors onen and a fan going, Uut
she could still smell it in the house. I also explained to her that tiie :iayor and the Cit ;
.ttorney lould be getting in touch with IIoeing in the immediate future to have
them correct the problem, since there is an ordinance which forbids th dump-
ing of untreated, industrial wastes into t}ie seer sYtem. ('"his c2,e:i.ical has ,
:een diverted from the sewage lagoon since it .ould };ill the iagoon.) one
rather peculiar aspect of the problem is that the Johnson home i on top of a
nill and no one else betcveen IIoeing and the Johnson residence has co;.olaincd
of this problem. We don't know why it aorks this way. irs. Jonnson renored
thnt she hud noticed the smell at various times for reveral .ee}:s, but s::e hac?',
attributed it originally to their oil furnace. She said sh called a Furnace !
man to corae out. He »nt into the baerent, ear.ed over the furnace, tool: a !
good deep breath, went back out to his truck, and ve r nearly fell he was so
dizzy, so the house must have been loaced with fumes at thac time. :lnparently,
Ciiep blew it out aftercaard with no ill effects, but she has become rore and I
more concerned about it, obviously.
_-'IiEN NOi1F1ED OF 1CT10.
, /,lti...---
'-
❑ iH ocfuN+ LJr 'Eco+e
QaK'.
`ov tE'._Er :eq
rq_
 . .
f
